I think I need to read about 87 books on British history to fully understand this。

Shirleon Sharron

This just gets more and more wild。 I LOVE IT。

Not QUITE as good as earlier volumes, it feels like one of those that are needed to get to where it’s going rather than having a huge value of its own。 But it’s still gorgeous and makes some fun points。 I’m really looking forward to volume 5。

3。5 - can’t remember all the characters at this point! Mostly the baddies and their stories。

With all of Britain in the Otherworld, things get dicey。 I found the way Gillen works folktales and stories, even mythologies, into something malicious。 There is a nice sense of threat throughout the book。 The cliff-hanger ending did its job: I want to see what comes next。

I read these books with limited investment, which is to say I don’t care that much and I may forget the fine plot details from one book to the next, but they are fun。 Oodles of fun and Dan Mora’s art just really knocks it out of the park。The plot is actually quite decent – with King Arthur and his knights reimagined as nightmarish creatures determined to take over the world。 From the Otherworld。 There are other realms, tons of action and wild, wild, wild imagery。Plus, you got the best grandma a I read these books with limited investment, which is to say I don’t care that much and I may forget the fine plot details from one book to the next, but they are fun。 Oodles of fun and Dan Mora’s art just really knocks it out of the park。The plot is actually quite decent – with King Arthur and his knights reimagined as nightmarish creatures determined to take over the world。 From the Otherworld。 There are other realms, tons of action and wild, wild, wild imagery。Plus, you got the best grandma a boy can ask for。 And a boy (well, a man, really) who asked for none of it and still got stuck saving the world。Gorgeous and entertaining, this is an all-around fun adventure。 Can’t believe this is the same person who did The Wicked and Divine which is practically unreadable in its tediousness (and I tried, at least two books)。 Guess he matured。 Anyway, yeah, bright and bombastic。 Fight the knights, fight the night, save the world。 All that。 Ok。This and more at https://advancetheplot。weebly。com/ 。。。more

Another fairly satisfying entry in a series with no clear ending in sight。 I've accepted that I simply won't understand much of Once & Future, so I enjoy the pretty pictures and tremendous action scenes。 Every time Bridgette speaks, I tune in, because inevitably she's introducing some brand new character or concept that she probably should have mentioned at the very beginning。With Britain having been subsumed by Otherworld in the last volume, we find our heroes hunting for weapons and a more def Another fairly satisfying entry in a series with no clear ending in sight。 I've accepted that I simply won't understand much of Once & Future, so I enjoy the pretty pictures and tremendous action scenes。 Every time Bridgette speaks, I tune in, because inevitably she's introducing some brand new character or concept that she probably should have mentioned at the very beginning。With Britain having been subsumed by Otherworld in the last volume, we find our heroes hunting for weapons and a more defensible home。 Fortunately, Bridgette's old house is the grail castle in Otherworld, so that's one problem solved。 The problem of attaining weapons brings an interesting new monster-hunter into the fold ((view spoiler)[Will Shakespeare - plenty of story material to mine from there (hide spoiler)])。The aspect of Once & Future that has me most confused is the bit where there are multiple Arthurs and Merlins roaming around, fighting for supremacy ((view spoiler)[three by the end! (hide spoiler)])。 Was that explained at some point? The variety of Arthurs and Knights of the Round Table basically blend together until I forget who I need to care about and why。 Presumably, Bridgette and Duncan need to kill them all, right? Maybe I'm not meant to care。Dan Mora's art continues to stun and raise the caliber of the book。 I consider it a bad sign, though, when the scene I found most enjoyable involved a replaceable side character realizing he'd become Jack of "Jack and the Beanstalk" fame。 Once & Future needs more moments like that - more room to breathe。 。。。more

Demons King Arthur, Merlin, Galahad, Lancelot, and their allies draw the whole of Britain into their Otherworld for what looks like an epic fight to the finish。 But another claiming to be king comes along and civil war breaks out。 Meanwhile, our heroes are trying to keep their friends and families safe with mixed results。 Can Robin Hood perhaps save the day? 。。。more

Enjoyed this more, although I'm still a little confused on this idea of stories and how they govern what is happening, plus the multitude of Arthurs/Knights。 Those details just never really get explained (unless I've completely overlooked them)。 It makes it frustrating because it's all intriguing, but you get the sense that it isn't fully thought out or have strict rules, and if you look too closely you will realize it doesn't make sense。 It does make me ashamed that either I don't know or can't Enjoyed this more, although I'm still a little confused on this idea of stories and how they govern what is happening, plus the multitude of Arthurs/Knights。 Those details just never really get explained (unless I've completely overlooked them)。 It makes it frustrating because it's all intriguing, but you get the sense that it isn't fully thought out or have strict rules, and if you look too closely you will realize it doesn't make sense。 It does make me ashamed that either I don't know or can't remember the details of the stories that are referenced。 That leaves you with just hanging on for the ride and either enjoying the quibbling jokes between the heroes or the battles with different monsters, which is fun but feels a bit shallow。 Gillen still continues to touch on the main characters more, this time on Rose and her family。 The primary monster this time around was cool to see and the cliffhanger is an old favorite of mine, so I'm eager to see what they bring to the story。Sadly, my library doesn't have the fifth and final volume yet。 Hopefully that's coming soon so I can see how this ends。 。。。more

Continues to solidly deliver on wacky legends becoming reality shenanigans。 It’s a constant BATLE BATTLE BATTLE, though, and I would really appreciate a breather to just… plot a little bit? Actually tell each other what is going on instead of relying on dramatic reveals to both the other characters and the reader?

All of Britain has been sucked into Otherworld。 There's still a ton of action。 The art is great。 Gillen does expect the reader to have a degree in ancient British lore though。 I know a lot of mythology and some of this still escaped me。 Also not sure why there are multiple Arthurs running around。 It may have been explained in the previous volume but, if so, I've forgotten。 Still, this is fun even without knowing every reference。 I do wish there was a concordance in the back though。 All of Britain has been sucked into Otherworld。 There's still a ton of action。 The art is great。 Gillen does expect the reader to have a degree in ancient British lore though。 I know a lot of mythology and some of this still escaped me。 Also not sure why there are multiple Arthurs running around。 It may have been explained in the previous volume but, if so, I've forgotten。 Still, this is fun even without knowing every reference。 I do wish there was a concordance in the back though。 。。。more

King Arthur returned as an undead monster, and thanks to a foolish Prime Minister, everyone knows it so he and his kind, the stuff of stories and legends, are free to roam across Britain and kill people。 The Maguire family is on both sides of the conflict, but one interesting thing is since Arthur is mostly made of stories and there are lots of Arthur stories。。。there can be more than one Arthur。 And they don't much like each other。。。 King Arthur returned as an undead monster, and thanks to a foolish Prime Minister, everyone knows it so he and his kind, the stuff of stories and legends, are free to roam across Britain and kill people。 The Maguire family is on both sides of the conflict, but one interesting thing is since Arthur is mostly made of stories and there are lots of Arthur stories。。。there can be more than one Arthur。 And they don't much like each other。。。 。。。more

I'm feeling like this Volume is the start of the middle section of the story。 The cast is continuing to expand, but I feel like something big is coming and it will be seriously bloody。 (and this Volume is plenty bloody enough!)Highlights: - Bridgette and Duncan risk an encounter with fairies to retrieve weapons, then move their group back to their home, which in Otherworld, is now the site of the Grail Castle。 Much more room and defensible。- A second King Arthur, who rather than looking like a z I'm feeling like this Volume is the start of the middle section of the story。 The cast is continuing to expand, but I feel like something big is coming and it will be seriously bloody。 (and this Volume is plenty bloody enough!)Highlights: - Bridgette and Duncan risk an encounter with fairies to retrieve weapons, then move their group back to their home, which in Otherworld, is now the site of the Grail Castle。 Much more room and defensible。- A second King Arthur, who rather than looking like a zombie is clad in futuristic armor, shows up in England, with a Merlin, Lancelot, and Guinevere of his own。 The battle between kings is immanent。 - A gorgon shows up and starts terrorizing the countryside。 Rose (with Bridgette and Duncan) goes to Bath to rescue her parents。 Eliold, a Knight siding with the newer Arthur, shows up to slay the Gorgon, and does。。。。 but only after ripping his own eyes out。- As the main group (Bridgette, Duncan, and Rose) prepares to leave the Grail Castle to seek out better weaponry, they try their best to train the remaining people, but the arrival of a hungry giant has one of them falling into the story of Jack and the Beanstalk。。。 but much more gory。 LOL- The main group finds a hidden cache of weapons that belonged to one of the Greatest Hunters ever: William Shakespeare。 (LOL) His "pen" being mightier than any sword。。。- As the Kings and their armies meet in battle, the main group calls a new hero to cause trouble for all。 The feather on Shakespeare's pen came from one of Robin Hood's arrows。。。。Love all the colliding mythologies。 Can't wait to see what Robin Hood does。。。This is a consistently good book。 Recommend。。。。 though obviously start at the beginning。 。。。more

Hovered between three and four stars on this one。 A whole lot gets introduced: new human characters and far too many characters from stories。 Most of both categories are barely used。 A volume of mostly set up? As with the 3rd volume of the series, the illustrations of Dan Mora are exceptional and the action scenes are quite satisfying。However, the story becomes even more complicated with more new characters being introduced, even at this point in the story, and different versions of Arthurs and Merlins get thrown in the mix, making the final result a confusing mess。

*I read this volume as single issues of the comic and am reviewing them all as one for this volume。 Dude what is going on in this story? Sticking around for the art and the “what will happen next?” of it all。 There’s a part where Merlin says something like “This will never end,” and after being met by more Arthurs than I can keep track of I’m starting to feel the same way。

Bit of a dip after the last installment, but still solid。 This one had lots of lore monsters, kings to keep track of。 I think Jack’s giant would inspire early retirement in all but the most stalwart of beanstalk climbers。 The art continues to be amazing。
